Workshops and Residencies
The Ugly Spirit Workshop Programme "A-roaming we went - drawing here, recording there.......Miss Tanya Raabe and Mr David Hoyle travelled the country seeking out people's stories, uncovering wondrous, infamous tales and extraordinary visions. Using symbolism and surrealist drawing methods they helped create potent images and sound recordings that explored circuses and sideshows from 1940's London; the work of RD Laing, the sixties radical psychiatrist, and body image and exclusivity within gay club culture. Discovering how our appearance can so often lead to other people making assumptions about us." Tanya Raabe

Tanya Raabe and David Hoyle have run a series of large scale visual art based workshops and audio recordings focusing on exploring people's divided selves. These sessions have provoked a whole range of powerful and evocative images and conversations about self, identity of self, family and personal relationships, cultural growth and the celebration of difference.
The work that has come out of these workshops has proven to be extraordinarily exciting and visually demanding, challenging a contemporary view of the inner self. Something that is usually hidden from others and is only known by those who choose to see. In the making of "The Ugly Spirit", this preparatory work has proved invaluable in influencing the content and design of the work.
While the show restores to centre stage lost voices from history, this preparatory work ensures that the subject matter exists firmly in the now. As the intra-cultural nature of our society flourishes whilst at the same time the gaps between the 'have and have-not's' deepen; the sense of division, of disassociation from roots, from nation and nationhood, is a global phenomenon.
For a small financial inducement this range of art based, sound based and drama based workshops can be designed to fit your venue! For further information contact Deborah Wintle at Fittings.
