SPUTNIK

"A project of posibilities"

In 2009 Fittings joined forces with Glasgow based Russian kinetic sculpture specialists Sharmanka and dancer aerialist Claire Cunningham to create a fusion of human and machine, an installation called “Sputnik”.

Originally commissioned by the Without Walls Consortium SPUTNIK toured with various travellers from 2009 to 2013

The work is a classically intricate Sharmanka creation fired by gothic sensibility,  irreverence & humour. It explores the possibilities of flesh & steel hard wired to the imagination.

“In building a machine we are so intent upon our purpose that we forget that we are investing that machine with creative power… it can overgrow us in an invisible way… they are the dwelling- places of given powers that may destroy us." C J Jung
