Talking about an Institution

Liverpool based Fittings Multimedia Arts are embarking on an oral history project collecting stories from people who are, or have been, part of the institutionalised care system.

The project is a continuation of themes explored in the musical play, Welcome to the Institute, which was produced by Fittings and toured the UK last year.

The show was based on a concept album of the same name written by Lee Sterling, who himself experience the day care system from the age of sixteen when he lost his sight.

Fittings are currently recording interviews with residents and users of care homes and day centres that took part in some of the performances on last year's tour.

The project is working with centres in Telford, Shropshire and Cornwall and at the Lime Court Day Centre in Liverpool.

The resulting oral history archive will be launched as part of Dada Fest this September and will centre on a film that will include footage from outreach work produced as part of the Welcome to the Institute tour..

The recorded interviews will be stored as part of the National Sound Archive.

Artistic Director of Fittings, Garry Robson, explains more:

“The Welcome to the Institute Oral History Archive is a wonderful and very interesting insight into the experiences of real people, a great many of whom find the care system a vital part of their lives. It is really important for us to make sure that their stories are told in a positive light and for them to be recorded as a part of our National history.”
